A Fisheries Indaba was recently convened in the Eastern Cape by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. One of the stated purposes of such Indaba was to “create a platform to interact with the various role players to help foster and reinforce a consultative platform for fishery stakeholders to engage.”
Apparently as a result of poor attendance at such Indaba the Honourable Deputy Minister was quoted in the Herald Live online newspaper as stating the following: “I am really disappointed with the owners of big business. They saw fit not to be with us here today.
“There are issues we need to discuss with them.”
The Honourable Deputy Minister is correct in that currently consultation between stakeholders in the fishing industry and government is sorely needed.
