Vanderkloof Dam Experiment. To Feed or Not?

Subsistence fishermen make use of traditional stone fish kraals in the pools directly below the Vanderkloof dam wall. the use of these kraals has been one of several contentious issues raised in meetings between dam stakeholders involved in a new experimental fishery for the area.

The Vanderkloof Dam experimental fishing research project has woken some toothy monsters – and it hasn’t even started yet.

Several years ago Rhodes University lecturer Qurban Rouhani landed a dream assignment: plumb the depths of the legendary Vanderkloof Dam to find out what is in there. Many would pay for such a privilege; Rouhani can do it on work time and claim expenses.

A 120km-long watery slither of fish heaven in the heart of the country, sandwiched between three provinces, teeming with several sought-after species that have drawn anglers like ants to honey ever since the dam wall went up exactly 40 years ago: this is where Rouhani gets to put in a hard day’s work, poor guy.
