The Vanderkloof Dam experimental fishing research project has woken some toothy monsters – and it hasn’t even started yet.
Several years ago Rhodes University lecturer Qurban Rouhani landed a dream assignment: plumb the depths of the legendary Vanderkloof Dam to find out what is in there. Many would pay for such a privilege; Rouhani can do it on work time and claim expenses.
A 120km-long watery slither of fish heaven in the heart of the country, sandwiched between three provinces, teeming with several sought-after species that have drawn anglers like ants to honey ever since the dam wall went up exactly 40 years ago: this is where Rouhani gets to put in a hard day’s work, poor guy.
