While there exists a large diversity in fisheries and fisheries systems around the world, there is one commonality in this industry and that is the fish market. Food markets have been around since ancient times.
Fish with olive oil, wine or bread is a common thread throughout recorded history as the fashion for both rich and poor. One of my favourite pastimes, and a source of endless enjoyment on my travels around the world, was visiting fish markets and the surrounding fishing harbours. Always so much more interesting than the normal touristy sites.
