Shark Study. Genetic Research Sheds Light on Managing Local Species

A unique shark study along the South African coast has raised concerns about the management of some of our local shark species, which could be at risk of over-fishing.

Genetic tests of three shark species found in South African waters found a surprising degree of genetic variation in two of the three species. The result suggests fisheries managers should review the current policy framework whereby there are no specific catch restrictions for these species.
